One of my goals for the summer was to take some computer parts I had laying around and create my own portable hard drive. I had been dissatisfied with the often generic look and sometimes flimsy construction of most plastic enclosures available for purchase. This being said and after creating my own wood veneer iPhone skin I thought it would be nice to once again marry the mechanical and organic worlds. I utilized a laser cutter to fabricate both the prototypes and finished versions featured below.<\/p>\n

The first prototype I made was to see how small I could get the general dimensions and determine where I would need to place mounting hardware. My goal was to make the final version as slim and compact as possible.<\/p>\n

After creating the first mockup I learned a few things and was able to create a second version that had recesses in the shape of the nuts. These recesses were constructed to be deep enough that they would prevent the nuts from spinning when the bolts were tightened into them and afford for a thin layer of Birds Eye Maple wood veneer to be placed over the top surface concealing the hardware from sight (as seen in the final version).<\/p>\n

Now that most of the technical issues for fabrication have been solved I will begin development on branding and packaging for the product. Once I\u2019m done you can expect to see it in my store!<\/p>\n
